VA Nursing Homes: Quality Data Concealed, Released by USA Today

Updated: Jul 5, 2018

In a recent article by USA Today, internal documents were obtained that revealed mistreatment and poor care for veterans in over half of the 133 VA nursing homes nationwide. A total of 60 VA nursing home facilities receive a 1 out of 5 stars on quality rankings. After being questioned on the secrecy of data for "internal use", the VA has released some of that information to the public. That data provided by the VA can be found by clicking here. The data is limited and shows the quality scores of the nursing home facilities across the nation.

According to this press release by the Department of Veterans Affairs, "For years, the Obama administration had resisted making certain VA quality data public. But under President Trump’s leadership, transparency and accountability have become hallmarks of VA."

“Now that VA has made a commitment to reporting accurate quality and comparative data on its nursing homes, we are pleased to begin adding that important information to our transparency portfolio for the benefit of Veterans in making their health care choices,” said Acting VA Secretary Peter O’Rourke.

According to USA Today, the data that was obtained revealed problems at nursing home facilities, including:

  • Pain management issues

  • Medication mismanagement

  • Negligence

  • Infections

  • Bedsores

If you, or a loved one, have suffered harm at the hands of a VA nursing home or other federal facility, we can help you determine whether or not you have a claim.  Then, we can help you to prosecute that claim, so that those who caused that harm do not get away with it and you are rightfully compensated.
