This recent article from the Washington Post tells a very sad story. It is no secret that the VA has a problem with preventing suicides among veterans. We know this and see such cases all the time in our nationwide FTCA medical malpractice work. What is so unsettling are the many veterans who actually kill themselves on VA campuses, usually the parking lot. As one of the experts quoted in the article states, the choice of location is significant. Truly, veterans are making the ultimate protest over poor care by ending their lives in the parking lot of the entity that has failed them. Something needs to change and it needs to change soon.
